Surprise : Radovljica, Slovenia
EUROPE, TOWN, COUNTRY
IN THE MOOD : SUMMERTIME IN RADOVLJICA, SLOVENIA
.
One word to describe Slovenia? Surprise. Take the small town of Radovljica, near Lake Bled. In the photo above you can see the view from our room. We had the same view from our dinner table, a small red- and white-checkered, cloth-covered table that was carried across the garden to the terrace, just for us.
After dinner we walked to a soccer pitch that our boys had spotted from the back seat of our rental car. “Let’s go find it,” we said. The park was delightful that summer evening, with sprinklers spraying water, toddlers swinging on swings and our boys, with local kids, kicking the ball around.
Radovljica is a super charming town nestled on the Sava river and therefore it must be popular with tourists, although I didn’t see any, not one. The days were hot but the river was cool because it was shaded by a dense patch of trees. We had the best swim in that river, along with a thousand tiny fish nipping at our feet. My youngest son couldn’t stop laughing because he’s ticklish.
We swam in Lake Bled too, toward the iconic bell-towered island. We swam in every body of water we stumbled upon, just as we said yes to every walking path and local wine. In Slovenia, it’s easy. We scratched the surface, and are looking forward to going back to explore this gem.
